On Thursday 30th January the BJHS held our second annual International Day of Education, where we celebrate all the different cultures represented by the pupils in our school. To this end, the pupils were grouped into teams based on language and culture. They then prepared stalls that were designed to show off these cultures and thus show their fellow pupils what is special to them. Naturally, food plays a large role in this, so all the stalls had a large emphasis on typical and traditional foods from their regions of the world.
All the pupils were able to wander around the school, trying out various different food and finding out a little more about the myriad cultures that our diverse school population represents. All in all, a wonderful experience for everyone – one that not only fosters a sense of pride in one’s own culture, but also aids the appreciation of other cultures, something that in this day and age often seems comes up too short, especially in modern politics. Here at the BJHS we have the motto “Taking a World View” – and this event shows that it is more than just some empty words.
Many thanks to all involved, especially all the parents who assisted their children with preparing so much fantastic food for everyone to try. This would not have been possible without you.
